Building Strong Kids, Strong Families, and Strong Communities
In the 150 years since the first YMCA in
San Francisco
opened in a few small rooms above a post office in
Chinatown
, the organization has played a crucial role in improving the quality of life of millions of Bay Area residents. Today, the YMCA of San Francisco is pivotal in addressing some of the major challenges faced by the Bay Area.
Through branches like the
Mission
and Peninsula Family, the YMCA of San Francisco builds strong kids, strong families and strong communities by enriching the lives of all people in spirit, mind and body. Today, the YMCA provides leadership in Child Care, Mentoring, Health and Wellness, Job Readiness, Substance Abuse Prevention, After-school tutoring, Environmental education, Youth sports and recreation, Swimming instruction, English tutoring, and many more!
Inclusion is at the heart of the YMCA’s mission. Not only is every program designed to allow anybody to participate - no matter their skill or fitness level - but all activities are affordable, with financial assistance available for those unable to pay. In 2005 alone, the YMCA of San Francisco has provided financial assistance to more than 25,000 youth, adults and seniors-with a full 48 percent of youth program participants receiving full or partial support.
In YMCA programs, over 1,000 kids each day will learn the respect, responsibility, honesty and caring they'll need to succeed in life. They'll find guidance and friendship, laughter and inspiration. And over the year, the YMCA of San Francisco will reach out to thousands more kids to ensure they receive the resources and opportunities they need to be their best, regardless of where they live.

| YMCA Child Care Programs: A Good Place to Grow |
 |
From its very beginning, the YMCA has recognized the need to provide guidance to young people as they begin making their way in the world. The YMCA Pro-Am at Pasatiempo is the major fundraiser that supports these programs at the
Mission
and Peninsula Family branches of the YMCA of San Francisco.
The YMCA is dedicated to providing high-quality, affordable child care. As the nation's largest provider of child care programs, the YMCA provides family-centered, values-based programs to nurture children's healthy development. Well-trained staff provide safe, affordable, high-quality care so you can have peace of mind while you work. Like all Y programs, child care is open to all, with financial aid available. Staff members are partners with parents and other caregivers, working together to help kids grow up healthy, happy and strong.
YMCA preschool care builds on children's natural desire to learn new things and become more self-reliant. Getting along with other children, sharing, taking turns and working in a group are a natural part of playing games or learning a new craft. The Y is an exciting and challenging place, helping preschoolers stretch their skills in mind and body. It is also a safe, comfortable place where children build positive relationships with caring adults.

| YMCA Summer Camp Programs: A Classic Part of Summer |
 |
Imagine a place where hundreds of youth find the confidence to express themselves creatively through songs, art, adventure and new friendships. The YMCA summer camp programs are about more than just the nonstop fun that campers remember. It is about the enhanced self-esteem, the leadership skills, the sense of responsibility for themselves and the world around them, and the motivation to achieve...this is what each camper takes with them at the end of the summer as they return to school. The focus of these camps is to present children with opportunities they may not normally experience in "inner-city" life. Children have an opportunity to participate in group activities, games and crafts. In addition, youth are able to go on trips that include parks, museums, beaches, pools and places that explore the diverse culture of the San Francisco Bay Area.
